Everything you need to bring Eswatini produce to South African market

From farm-gate aggregation in Eswatini to buyer delivery at MIF, we cover aggregation, phytosanitary compliance, refrigerated logistics, and direct market access under one arrangement.

01

Produce Aggregation

Turning smallholder volumes into market-ready consignments

South African buyers operating through MIF require consistent consignment sizes that individual Eswatini smallholders generally cannot fill on their own. A single farm producing 300 kg of tomatoes cannot access a buyer who needs five tonnes per week.

We solve this by working directly with cooperatives, farmer groups, and individual smallholders to consolidate production into commercially viable consignments. Grading is handled to South African market standards, packing follows buyer specifications, and volume planning runs on forward schedules so buyers can rely on what is coming.

Producer payments are transparent and benchmarked to actual MIF market prices, not informal trader rates.

Key points

  • Works with cooperatives and individual smallholders
  • Grading and packing to SA market standards
  • Forward volume planning for buyer confidence
  • Payment benchmarked to MIF market prices
02

Market Access via MIF

Direct entry to South Africa's largest fresh produce buyers

The Multimodal Import Facility is a purpose-built fresh produce import hub in Johannesburg, serving South Africa's largest retail, wholesale, and foodservice buyers. Shuri AgriTrade holds a market agent position at MIF, which means Eswatini producers get direct access to that demand without spending years building buyer relationships independently.

The supply route runs from Eswatini collection points, across the Jeppes Reef / Matsamo crossing, to MIF. Matsamo is approximately 40 km from the facility, making it one of the shortest cross-border fresh produce routes we know of. Combined with Eswatini's SACU membership and the resulting zero customs duty, landed cost for Eswatini-origin produce at MIF is highly competitive.

As a SACU member, Eswatini exports enter South Africa without customs duties. That structural advantage is written into the SACU treaty and not subject to annual renegotiation.

Key points

  • Shuri AgriTrade holds a market agent position at MIF
  • SACU: zero customs duties on Eswatini-origin produce
  • Matsamo to MIF is approximately 40 km
  • Access to retail, wholesale, and foodservice buyers

Phytosanitary Compliance

Compliant at crossing, cleared at MIF

All fresh produce entering South Africa must meet Plant Protection Research Institute requirements. This means a valid phytosanitary certificate issued by the Eswatini authority before export, and, for certain commodities, fumigation treatment to manage specific pests and diseases.

MIF is equipped with its own Maximum Residue Level laboratory and a cold sterilisation fumigation room. Compliance checks happen at point of arrival rather than at a separate external facility, which shortens clearance time and reduces the risk of produce sitting in holding while waiting for a test result.

We coordinate the full process: phytosanitary certification on the Eswatini side, border inspection facilitation at Matsamo, MRL testing at MIF on arrival, and fumigation where required in MIF's cold sterilisation room.

Key points

  • Phytosanitary certificates coordinated from the Eswatini side
  • PPRI inspection facilitation at Matsamo
  • MRL testing in MIF's on-site laboratory
  • Cold sterilisation fumigation available at MIF

Cold Chain Logistics

Unbroken temperature control from farm to receiving bay

Fresh produce quality is time- and temperature-sensitive. A break in the cold chain between Eswatini collection and MIF arrival reduces shelf-life, increases buyer deductions, and damages the reputation Eswatini-origin produce needs to build in the South African market.

Our refrigerated transport runs the full route: from Eswatini farm collection points, through the Matsamo crossing, to MIF's temperature-controlled receiving bays. Pre-cooling happens at origin before loading. Transit temperatures are monitored throughout and recorded, giving buyers the documentation to verify what they are receiving.

Shorter transit distance compared to non-SACU origins means less time on the road and more shelf-life remaining on arrival. That translates directly to better buyer pricing and lower shrinkage deductions.

Key points

  • Refrigerated transport from Eswatini collection to MIF
  • Pre-cooling at origin before loading
  • Temperature monitoring and records throughout transit
  • Shorter route means more shelf-life on arrival
